Uplinking: deadline extended
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
OCT. 14.
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday extended the deadline for adhering to the prescribed eligibility criteria/guidelines regarding uplinking of news and current affairs television channels from India to October 31. The extension has been granted primarily to allow the Ministry more time to examine various issues related to the revised eligibility criteria for uplinking such channels.
Granting the extension, the Cabinet noted the fact that proposals seeking amendments in the existing guidelines are being processed in consultation with the Ministries concerned and will be referred to it for consideration in the near future.
In March 2003, the National Democratic Alliance government had set foreign ownership / management control restrictions on channels having any element of news and current affairs content.
