Quotas in industry

Sir, — Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's statement that no one can stop job reservation in the private sector, an idea whose time has come, has exposed him.

With the unprecedented brain drain and the collapse of the PSUs as a result of half a century of reservation, it is time to scrap all kinds of reservation.

Sir, — By proposing reservation in the private sector, Dr. Singh has joined the bandwagon of seasoned politicians. He has worked in key government positions during his career and knows the damage done by reservation to the public sector.

The policy has resulted in brain drain for the last 50 years. Reservation in the private sector will cause entrepreneurship drain in the next 50 years.

Sir, — The UPA Government obviously is serious about widening the ambit of reservation. But whether it will help is the question. The past is the best answer. Reservation has been misused by a few to corner all benefits. The rate at which reservation is sought to be expanded, a day will come when quota will have to be given to the general category as well.

Mohita Bhargava,
New Delhi

Sir, — Simple arithmetic tells us that it is futile to use reservation as an enduring approach for progress. At the most, we can have 100 per cent reservation. Even if every college seat and job were to be reserved, it would still leave a vast majority illiterate and impoverished. We have to think of a better way. While I do not know what it is, I do know what it is not.
