KOLKATA, OCT. 23. Vijayadasami was celebrated throughout West Bengal today amid immersion of Durga idols.

It is believed that goddess Durga leaves from her maternal home to her husband's abode, Mount Kailash on this day.

In keeping with the tradition, married women carried out ritualistic "Debi baran" (offering prayers with sweets) and "sindur khela" (smearing each other with vermilion). Large queues were seen in front of Puja pandals where women waited for their turn to offer prayers.

Immersion of idols in rivers and ponds was continuing. Elaborate security arrangements had been made at all ghats along the Hooghly river in the metropolis and at all points across the State to prevent any untoward incident.

All immersions would have to be completed by October 25, police said. — PTI
