Lalu Prasad leads immersion march

By K. Balchand

PATNA, OCT. 23. The Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, today hit the road taking the people of Patna by surprise.

For the first time, this had nothing to do with politics. The Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo was paying obeisance to Durga, the goddess of strength and might, at the conclusion of the Durga Puja today.

Mr. Prasad had installed the idol of the goddess at the Chief Minister, Rabri Devi's residence. And today, he led the immersion procession, walking from his home to the Collectorate Ghat on the banks of the Ganga. He carried a lathi and, at times, demonstrated his skill with it. He was accompanied by Ministers of the Rabri Devi Cabinet and Union Ministers. He did not travel on the boat to immerse the idol midstream.

He performed the rituals at the ghat and allowed others to submerge the idol. Mr. Prasad, Ms. Rabri Devi and the Governor, M. Rama Jois, participated in the Ravana Badh celebrations at the Gandhi Maidan.
