Unusual petition
AHMEDABAD,
OCT. 23.
A local court today rejected an unusual petition filed by an inmate of the Sabarmati Central Jail, who sought permission to end his life, and told the jail authorities to furnish a detailed medical report within a week's time.
The City Sessions Court Judge, Sonia Gokani, rejected the unusual plea by Ashwin Shah, jailed for cheating and fraud cases for the past 21 months and observed: ``There is no provision in the law for mercy killing and the court cannot grant permission to commit suicide as it would amount to an offence.''
The court, however, said that as per the Gujarat High Court's directives the State Government should bear the expenses of the inmate's failing health and heart problems.
The prisoner had filed the petition last week and said he wanted the court's permission to end his life owing to poor health. PTI
