Letters to the Editor
Sir, That it took the Special Task Force more than a decade to capture Veerappan does not speak much of its capabilities. What is surprising is the bonanza (cash reward, house sites and promotion) showered on it. Since it is the taxpayer who is burdened, should he or she not have a say in the matter?
Hilda Raja,
* * * Sir, The STF's achievement is indeed laudable. But the rewards appear to be a knee-jerk reaction. The force was constituted to do exactly what it did on October 18. It would be more worthwhile if the Government bestowed similar recognition on the countless paramilitary and army jawans who get killed in counter-insurgency operations.
Irene Rajesh,
* * * Sir, The generous gifts to the police force from the common man's money could have been avoided.
A. Somasundaram,
* * * Sir, Do the STF personnel need to be given such rich reward? As long as forces supporting the likes of Veerappan are not dealt with, we will have to reckon with many more Veerappans.
S. Uvais,
