Winners & losers

Sir, — The media are obsessed with winners. The editorial, "Celebration and controversy" (Oct. 22) on David Mitchell's staggering novel Cloud Atlas that was denied the 2004 Booker Prize was a welcome surprise.

The immortal Argentine writer, Jorge Luis Borges, once said, "I am famous for not winning the Nobel Prize."

The truly `famous' writers of 2004 are losers David Mitchell and the astonishing Somali novelist, Nuruddin Farah, who missed the 2004 Nobel Prize for Literature.
