The idly

Sir, — The article, "Changes in the Indian menu over the ages" (Oct. 21) has dealt a severe blow to the pride of south Indians by saying `idly' (or idli) is an imported item. It is idle to presume this claim can be challenged, supported as it is by incontrovertible evidence.

When we sit for breakfast, idly is first on the menu. In fact a wag theorised that IDLY is an acronym for `I deeply love you'.

Alas! What a loss of face for us who thought the ideal eatable at all times was the indigenous idly!

R. Ramachandra Rao,
