KARWAR, OCT. 26. Pramod Mutalik, convenor of the South India unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, who was arrested on October 21 here on the charge of delivering inflammatory speech at Honnavar on September 9, was granted interim bail till October 28 by the Honnavar Judicial Magistrate First class on Monday. The court also ordered him to give a personal bond for Rs. 50,000. Pramod Mutalik was arrested when he came to Karwar to lead the "Anjadiv Chalo" on October 21. Earlier, a warrant was issued against Pramod Mutalik and eight others by the Honnavar court asking him to appear before the court after the Honnavar Police filed a chargesheet on September 9. While the eight persons appeared before the court and secured bail, Pramod Mutalik failed to do so till he was arrested.
`A success'
During his brief halt here while he was being taken to the Honnavar court from a jail in Belgaum, Pramod Mutalik told presspersons that "Anjadiv Chalo" was a success in the sense that the district administration suggested to the Naval authorities not to permit any community to hold religious ceremonies on the Island. This was what we wanted, he said. Pramod Mutalik said if prayers in a church located in the island were allowed on February 2, volunteers of the Bajrang Dal from all over the State would take out a "Karwar Chalo" on that day. He claimed his arrest was meant to torture him mentally. However, he was not deterred by such acts.
Memorandum
The leaders of Hindu organisations and also of the BJP, including S.R. Pikle and Krishna Ankolekar, submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner on Monday stating that the police were subjecting Pramod Mutalik to "mental torture". He was not allowed to contact his lawyers or family members within 12 hours of his arrest. In view of this, action should be taken against the officials concerned, they said.
Protest
Our Gulbarga SpecialCorrespondent reports: Members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal staged a rasta roko at Jagat Circle in Gulbarga for more than 30 minutes on Tuesday to protest against the arrest of Pramod Mutalik and others at Karwar. They were arrested when they tried to lead people to offer prayers at the Aryadurga Devi Temple at Anjadiv Island. They submitted a memorandum, addressed to the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, to the officials of the Revenue Department demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the people who were arrested on October 21. The convenor of the VHP, Shivarudra Gudda, said if the "anti-Hindu" stance of the Government continued, the Hindu organisations would intensify their agitation. The memorandum alleged that the State Government, in its zeal to please other communities, had limited the religious freedom of Hindus by preventing them from offering prayers at the Aryadurga Devi Temple on Dasara.
