Victoria Govt. selects Cheryl Naik as youth ambassador

MELBOURNE, OCT. 26. An Indian migrant has received the rare honour of being selected by a provincial government in Australia as one of the 17 youth ambassadors for an event to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the historical gold rush uprising.

Cheryl Naik (15), whose parents migrated from Mangalore, is the only person of South Asian origin appointed as a youth ambassador for the event being celebrated by the Government of Victoria as Eureka 150. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Eureka Stockade in which 300 British soldiers stormed a makeshift fort in the goldfield of Ballarat and killed 30 miners who were protesting against the mine administration.

The Government of Victoria has drawn up plans to celebrate the event considered a defining moment in Australia's history, which left behind a legacy of freedom, social democracy and cultural diversity. It provided many of the foundations on which contemporary Australian society is built. The Government of Victoria has appointed 17 youth ambassadors to help it propagate the message of Eureka to the youth of the State.

Proud

Cheryl Naik is an accomplished mass communicator and has been appointed to the media sub-group of the event. She has been giving television interviews on behalf of the Eureka team, exhorting the viewers to join in the celebrations.

``I cannot believe I have been invited by the Government (of Victoria) to be on the team. I feel so special to be part of this important event. I may not be flying the flag of India, but I will be working closely with the youth team to proudly fly the flag of Eureka, the flag symbolising democracy, dissent and demand for justice,'' Cheryl Naik, who was born in Melbourne, told PTI.

Launch

Launching the youth team, the Minister for the Arts, Victoria, Mary Delahunty, said "Eureka 150" was a commemoration of those who gave their lives for a principle and a celebration of the community values they helped to inspire. ``The involvement of young people in an event about democracy and rights is essential. It may have occurred 150 years ago, but the aspirations that fired Eureka — justice, democracy and the right to dissent — still have currency,'' she said.

``The story of Eureka has endured because of its key messages — a fair, open, innovative and independent society. Eureka was not only the birthplace of Australian democracy but was also a thoroughly multicultural affair,'' she added.
