Fake currency seized

ONGOLE, NOV. 2. The police here on Tuesday arrested five persons on the charge of circulating fake currency notes and seized fake currency worth Rs. 1.5 lakhs from them. The fake currency is in the denomination of one hundred rupee notes.

Following reports that fake currency was being circulated in the district, the Superintendent of Police, Mahesh Chandra Laddha, constituted a special team led by the town DSP, Ch. Chakrapani, to check the menace. The team arrested one Rangappa at the Ongole railway station on November 26 and seized fake currency of Rs. 12,500 from him. The arrested person told the police that he had been procuring fake currency notes from Bangalore and circulating the same through agents at different places in Andhra Pradesh.

On information given by him, the special team arrested four persons allegedly exchanging fake currency at Koppole railway gate here today and seized fake currency in denomination of 100 rupees and also 900 counterfeit five rupee coins from them.

Speaking to newspersons, Mr. Laddha said that the arrested persons were Adam of Kurnool, Tirumalaraju Subba Raju of Vijayawada, Munagala Giridhar of Eepurupalem and Tanikonda Venkateswarlu of Kandukur. He said Adam procured fake currency from Bangalore and circulated it through others. He exchanged three fake notes with one genuine one.

The police also arrested Bandaru Mohan of Chirala and seized genuine currency worth Rs. 10,000 from him when he came to exchange it with fake currency from Adam.

Mr. Laddha said that efforts are being made to nab Ramachandrappa of Bangalore, who allegedly supplied fake notes to the accused here.
