HYDERABAD, NOV. 2. The Central Government, through its Standing Counsel, informed a Division Bench of the High Court on Tuesday that the State Government had applied for site clearance for the Pulichintala major irrigation project on October 20. This submission was made when the Bench, comprising the Chief Justice, Devinder Gupta, and C.V. Ramulu was hearing a writ petition challenging the action of the State Government in going ahead with work on the project without obtaining the statutory clearances. Several persons from Krishna and Guntur districts filed impleading petitions and tried to impress upon the court that there was nothing wrong in going ahead with the project work. Senior counsel for the Union Government produced an intimation sent to him by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. The letter stated that the State Government had sought the site clearance vide its letter on October 20. It was further informed that the environmental impact assessment along with comments from the public hearing were to be submitted for environmental clearance. Counsel for the petitioner informed the court that reply to respondents would be submitted on Wednesday and conclude his arguments. The Bench adjourned the matter to Wednesday for final arguments on behalf of the petitioner.
