Additional DA for RTC staff

HYDERABAD: The Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of APSRTC has announced payment of additional Dearness Allowance of 1.8 per cent and arrears from July 1, 2004, on November 10. The decision has been taken following a representation made by the National Mazdoor Union. This will benefit 1.20 lakh employees, according to a press release.

Cabinet meet on November 6

Hyderabad: A Cabinet meeting has been convened by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on November 6 to discuss several pending issues.

The date for the next round of talks with naxalites will be top on the agenda. Sources in the Government said the meeting would finalise the approach to be adopted during the talks for insisting on laying down of arms and working out modalities if extremists accept the proposal.

The other issues likely to figure at the meeting include a review of the drought situation, the proposed visit of the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to the State, a decision on the unauthorised power connections and a review of the pending irrigation projects.

November 11 to be observed

as Education Day

Hyderabad: The Government has declared the birthday of Moulana Abul Kalam Azad on November 11 as Education Day. This follows the representation made by the All-India Urdu Educational Committee Chairman, Mohd. Jaleel Pasha.

The Principal Secretary, Higher Education, P. Paul Bhuyan, has directed heads of all educational institutions in the State to observe Education Day on November 11 in a befitting manner and to organise seminars, lectures and symposia in universities and colleges on the importance of education and eradication of illiteracy.

Similar instructions have also been issued to the Director, School Education, the Project Director, DPEP, and the secretary, APREIS.

Miner dies in detonator blast

ADILABAD: A Singareni worker died in a blast of a detonator while he was placing it in the Somagudem I mine on Tuesday.

According to reports reaching here, Shanigaram Ramulu, 52, a shot firer, was fixing the detonator in the Mandamarri situated mine at 9.30 a.m. when it went off accidentally. He died on the spot. He was a resident of Bharat Colony of Somagudem.

195 engineers promoted

Hyderabad: The Government on Tuesday resolved a 27-year-old dispute between two groups of employees in the Irrigation Department over seniority and promotions.

In a single stroke, it promoted 195 irrigation engineers. Accordingly, 37 executive engineers were promoted to the post of superintending engineer and 158 deputy executive engineers to the post of executive engineer.

The dispute over seniority and promotions was raging between the irrigation engineers recruited in 1977 by the Channa Reddy Government and their counterparts who were recruited a year later through the AP Public Service Commission. The Supreme Court had cleared the issue by an order favouring those recruited through the APSSC.

After a long gap, the Government implemented the apex court order on Tuesday.

Counselling for doctors'

promotion on Nov. 29

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Government Doctors' Association on Tuesday requested all doctors appointed in 1987 who are eligible for promotion to the post of deputy civil surgeons to send their applications and CRs to the Director of Health for inclusion in the list. The appeal comes in the wake of representations from districts that names of some eligible doctors have not been included.

A press release issued by Rajendra Prasad, president, and Chandra Sekhar Reddy, secretary-general of the association, said counselling for promotions would be held on November 29. They said the list of doctors nominated for promotions was announced by the Director of Health.

Cloud-seeding to be intensified

HYDERABAD: The Government has decided to intensify cloud-seeding operations as the North- East monsoon has set in covering the southern parts of the State.

According to press note issued here, cloud-seeding operations have already commenced from the Tirupati airport. The work on radar erection at Tirumala has commenced and is likely to be operational by November 14.

This will further add efficiency to the programme, as the radar will be able to cover the southern districts of Chittoor, Anantapur, Cuddapah, Nellore and Prakasam.

Elected fellow of Royal Society

TIRUPATI: N.V. Nanda Kumar, senior professor of zoology, Sri Venkateswara University, has been elected a fellow of The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, London.

The election is in recognition of Prof. Kumar's research on environmental epidemiology related to tropical diseases among slum-dwellers, healthcare workers in hospitals, health hazards of tannery industrial workers, toxic and medicinal plants of tropical regions and for developing simple bio-portable devices for detection of pollutants in field.

Journalist dead

Hyderabad: The senior journalist and well-known Lohiaite, Turlapati Satayanarayana, passed away on Monday night after a prolonged illness. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, in a condolence message recalled the contribution of Satyanarayana and said he stood by his principles throughout his life. In another message, Dr. Reddy expressed grief at the demise of noted writer, Sodum Jayaram. Dr. Reddy said that Jayaram, as a writer as well as a sarpanch, had won the hearts of people.

Four die as truck overturns

KURNOOL: Four persons died and 15 others sustained injuries when a truck overturned on the Kurnool-Kodumur highway near Kothur, 20 km from here, on Tuesday.

According to reports, the vehicle hit a culvert and overturned after the driver lost control.

Two cloth vendors and two women workers died on the spot. They were identified as Subhan and Khaja Hussain of Pyalakurthi near Kodumur and Janakamma and Rajyalakshmi of Kambadur near Kalyanadurgam in Anantapur district.

Drop in night temperature

Hyderabad: There was a drop in night temperature in the State on Tuesday. Khammam, Nizamabad and Ramagundam recorded the lowest temperature of 18 degree Celsius.

There was isolated rain in the three regions of the State during the 24-hour period ended Tuesday morning. Gudur recorded a rainfall of 5 cm, Kandukur 3 cm and Kavali and Nellore 2 cm each.

Isolated rain is likely over Rayalaseema on Wednesday and in the districts of Prakaam, Guntur and Krishna. Weather will be mainly dry in Telangana and the rest of coastal Andhra, according to a forecast by the State Met Office.

Student gets drowned

NELLORE: Suresh (10), a student of primary school in Doravarisatram, died when he went for a swim in a pond on Monday. A group of students returning from school saw noticed Suresh struggling for life and informed villagers, who rushed him to Naidupet for treatment, but he died on way.

Transco meetings

NELLORE: Transco authorities are organising consumer sessions from November 4 in Kavali sub-division to create awareness about power supply. The emphasis will be on supply for a minimum of seven hours without affecting the crop. The sessions will be held in Udayagiri, Seetaramapuram, Allur, Bogole, Dagadarthi and Sangam mandals.

Man washed away

CUDDAPAH: A construction worker, Ghouse Lajam (36), accidentally fell and got washed away in Vakkileru stream near K. Agraharam in Khajipet mandal on Tuesday. An epilepsy patient, Ghouse offered prayers in a Dargah and went to the canal for his daily chores and was washed away in Telugu Ganga water, according to available information. He was pulled out from the water by some natives and rushed to Khajipet primary health centre, where he was declared brought dead.

Takes charge

NELLORE: J.V.K. Prasad, Divisional Public Relations Officer, Narasaraopet of Guntur district, took over as the District Public Relations Officer (DPRO), Nellore, on Tuesday evening, replacing M. Venkataratnam, who has been at the helm of affairs for the last eight years and now posted as DPRO,

Guntur.

Woman dies of gastroenteritis

NELLORE: A woman has died of gastroenteritis at Pallepalem dalit colony of Manubolu mandal, while many others are reported suffering from the disease. They of them have been admitted in hospitals in and around Gudur.

Temple theft

NELLORE: The police in Naidupet have detected theft of ornaments in Karimanikyaswami temple in Tummuru village. The police on night beat found the lock of the main door broken and later detected the theft of `mangalasutram' of Goddess Lakshmi. Further investigation is on.

Legal camps

KURNOOL: The District Judge, G. Krishna Mohan Reddy, has said free legal aid camps will be conducted between November 3 and 6. Mr. Reddy has said during the week, Lok Adalat will be conducted in three divisions.

Local body meet

MADANAPALLE: The general body meeting of Nimmanapalle mandal parishad will be held on November 5 at 2 p.m. at its office, according to the MDO, K. Ramalakshmi.

Rasta roko by toddy-tappers

Sangareddy: Hundreds of toddy-tappers under the Gouda Jana Hakkula Porata Samithi staged a rasta roko on the National Highway 9, near here, on Tuesday protesting against the GO 767 which restricts toddy-tapping to a radius of 50 km.

After disrupting traffic for sometime, they proceeded to the Collector's office and submitted a memorandum.

Protest against service tax

ADILABAD: About 150 owners of tent houses and function halls from across the district staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate here on Tuesday demanding withdrawal of service tax.

They took out a rally in the town. The tent house and function hall association of Adilabad president and secretary, B. Goverdhan Reddy and Pavan Jaiswal respectively, said the Centre's decision to impose 10 per cent tax was unjustified.

Dictionary mela in Warangal

WARANGAL: Prajasakti Book House (PBH) is holding a dictionary mela at Town Hall, Public Gardens here. About 600 varieties of dictionaries are on display. Besides English, dictionaries of foreign languages - French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Italian and others -- are on display.

According to the executive member of PBH, M. Ganesh, dictionaries of all Indian languages, 20 foreign languages and dictionaries on different subjects are available. The price ranges from Rs. 75 to Rs. 5,000. The exhibition is open till November 15.

Special book exhibition

WARANGAL: Commemorating the 20th National Book Festival and Children's Day, Visalandhra Book House opened a special book exhibition here on Tuesday.

The branch manager, M. Janardhan, said a discount of 10 per cent was being offered. Besides the works of Telugu writers and poets, books brought out by a host of Indian and foreign publishers were on display.

Special attraction was special books on spirituality brought out by Geeta Press, Gorakhpur, which were priced low. The exhibition lasts till November 21.

`Open to all' running contest

WARANGAL: As part of the 38th Andhra Pradesh Police Games and Sports Meet, the district police propose to conduct an `Open to all' running competition on November 7.

The 8-km long event begins at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and covers the Collectorate, R&B Guest House, Public Gardens, Hanamkonda Chowrastha and terminates at the stadium.

The national volleyball player, K. Venkatnarayana, the Arjun awardee, Pitchaiah, B.L. Meena, DIG, and others will take part.

On the concluding day of the meet, a marathon event will be held. It begins at Kothagattu of Karimnagar district and ends at Warangal town covering a distance of 41.195 km, according to the Superintendent of Police, K. Srinivasa Reddy.
