HYDERABAD, NOV. 2. A lorry ran over four persons who were trying to extricate a passenger trapped in an auto-rickshaw involved in a road accident on the Tarnaka-Habsiguda road late last night. While three of them died on the spot, another is battling for life. The dead were identified as bar supervisor, Narsi Reddy (26), car driver, Chandraiah (28), and auto-rickshaw driver, Srinu (26). The mishap occurred when a parcel service van coming from Tarnaka lost control after its tyre burst and hit a road divider in front of the main gate of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB). In the process, it also uprooted an electric pole, overturned and fell on the auto-rickshaw. The auto driver fled after the mishap, leaving his passenger, Sridhar, trapped in the vehicle.
Deadly twist
Police and passers-by tried to extricate him. Though a crane was pressed into service, Sridhar could not be saved. The police and passers-by were standing on the roadside, when the second mishap occurred. "As the rescue operation was still on, our men were standing on the road and directing oncoming vehicles from Tarnaka to slow down. Around 1.10 a.m., we noticed this lorry hurtling towards us. Even as policemen were signalling to the driver to slow down, the vehicle drove onto them. We ran helter-skelter to save ourselves," a police officer recalled. The lorry, carrying some 30 tonnes of steel, ran over three persons -- Reddy, Srinu and Chandraiah -- who were helping the police in removing the vehicles involved in the earlier accident. While Reddy and Srinu stopped by, Chandraiah rushed to the accident scene in his car to shift the injured. The trio had just removed the van and were standing near the CCMB gate when the lorry mowed them down.
