Counterproductive

Sir, — Before the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP committed itself to exploiting the media in the thinking that it was a revolutionary mode of garnering mass support. Appearing on talk shows became a ritual. After the electoral debacle, the same media — evident from Uma Bharti's charge of `off-the-record' interviews against some of her colleagues on Wednesday — became the party's weakness. It is time the BJP realised that "drawing-room" leaders do not serve much purpose.

Gaurav Dua,
New Delhi

Sir, — Ms. Bharti's walkout in full media glare was a clear indication of the disintegration process in the BJP. The party has come a long way from its earlier image of a disciplined party.

K. Sundar Shetty,
Mysore

Sir, — The BJP is expected to behave with greater responsibility when out of power. It should have been cautious not to expose its infighting live on TV channels. Senior leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani should bring Ms. Bharti back to the party fold. Is discipline so fragile that it breaks when someone speaks the truth, may be a little loudly?

Raghubir Singh,
Pune

Sir, — The BJP leadership's decision, made in haste, will do no good to the party but it will send a clear message to the second generation leaders that indiscipline will not be tolerated.

P. Vasudev,
Edapal, Kerala
