Distress in 1987

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, NOV. 12. The last time the Kanchi Sankaracharya was the cause of distress to his devotees was in 1987 when he walked out of the Sankara Mutt leaving behind his "danda" and "kamandalam." On August 23 that year, he left the mutt without informing anyone, including the Paramacharya, Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi.

Apparently, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi was protesting against the restrictions placed on his time due to his duties as a mutt head. The walkout was intended to communicate his desire to devote more time to social and economic problems. He stayed at Talacauvery in Karnataka for a few days before returning to Kancheepuram to resume his duties.
