Implementation of `Early Harvest' proposed

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, NOV. 24. The Commerce and Industry Minister, Kamal Nath, today proposed the immediate implementation of the first phase — known as the `Early Harvest' — of the proposed economic cooperation with Pakistan.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the Pakistan Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz, he said the possibility of economic cooperation was discussed and it was suggested that the first part of the `Early Harvest' under the agreement could be started immediately. Mr. Aziz informed him that trade talks would be within the framework of the ongoing composite dialogue process and areas would be identified in which cooperation could benefit both countries.

Mr. Kamal Nath said a Joint Study Group at the Commerce Secretary-level on both sides would start functioning next month. It would look into all issues related to trade, including the grant of Most Favoured Nation status by Pakistan. It would also identify other areas of cooperation in goods and services.

Study group

India and Pakistan had agreed to set up a Joint Study Group on economic cooperation after Mr. Kamal Nath met his Pakistan counterpart, Humayun Akhtar Khan, and the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, in Islamabad on Tuesday. He noted that bilateral trade was currently pegged at $300 million as against an estimated potential of $200 billion.
