Godhra panel term extended

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, NOV. 24. The Union Cabinet today decided to extend by three months the tenure of the high-level committee set up to inquire into the incident of fire on the Sabarmati Express at Godhra in February 2002 in which 58 persons died. The incident sparked off one of the worst communal riots in Gujarat.

The panel, headed by the former Supreme Court Judge, U.C.Banerjee, was set up on September 3, 2004 and was earlier due to submit its report by December 4. Now it has been given time till March 4, 2005.

The panel is looking into various aspects relating to Railways safety and systems, including rescue and relief operations, upgradation of technology and preventive measures to avoid recurrence of such incidents. The Government's decision to set up the committee came after the Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, ordered in July a high-powered department inquiry into the incident. Announcing the extension, an official spokesperson said it had been given to enable the committee to complete its complex investigations and finalise its report.
