Jayalalithaa's statement not convincing, says Swamy
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI,
NOV. 24.
The Janata Party president, Subramanian Swamy, said today that the statement of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, defending the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, carried no conviction.
In a statement, Dr. Swamy said the Chief Minister should realise that police "cannot replace the courts on the weight of evidence."
Whatever the evidence, it still had to be tested in a court of law. Custodial interrogation could be carried out in a guesthouse or ashram or hotel, and there was no requirement under the law that it had to be either in police custody or in a `C' class jail.
However, Dr. Swamy said he completely endorsed the Chief Minister's views on the "flip-flop" of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi.
