Kalam takes Aziz into study

By Amit Baruah

NEW DELHI, NOV. 24. It was not just the stuff of formal diplomatic meetings. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, ushered the Pakistani Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz, and other members of his delegation into his Rashtrapati Bhavan study today and provided them with a computer demonstration of a key development programme.

When Mr. Kalam called for a joint India-Pakistan battle against the common enemy of poverty, Mr. Aziz readily agreed.

At this, Rashtrapati Bhavan sources said, Mr. Kalam invited Mr. Aziz into his study and demonstrated what India was doing with PURA — Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas — programme. The rest of the delegation trooped into Mr. Kalam's study along with Mr. Aziz.

Earlier, Mr. Aziz informed the President that his visit to India was connected with the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation and how he hoped that the regional grouping's work would gain further momentum. He also briefed Mr. Kalam about the current state of bilateral relations.

According to the sources, Mr. Kalam expressed satisfaction at the progress in bilateral dialogue. The meeting lasted 35 minutes. Mr. Aziz also renewed Islamabad's invitation to Mr. Kalam to visit Pakistan. At this, Mr. Kalam said he would discuss his visit with Government functionaries.
