Forest fire engulfing the wooded area in Chamundi Hills in Mysore on Tuesday.
MYSORE, DEC. 21. A major forest fire broke out in Chamundi Hills, facing Uttanahalli in Mysore on Tuesday. The fire that was first noticed around 5.30 p.m. in the foot of the Chamundi Hills spread to the small pockets of the hills and later engulfed a portion of forests. The dry grass and the foliage caught fire quickly and the shrubbery was destroyed. The Fire Services and Forest Department officials are struggling to contain the fire. Strong winds are fanning the flames making it difficult for fire fighters. The relief workers struggled to reach the spot as it is nearly half a kilometre away from the nearest road, and the fading light made matters worse. The fire was put out at 8 p.m. According to sources in the Forest Department, some miscreants in the villages may have lit the fire. The officials told The Hindu that the Fire Force is gearing for forest fire, which is normal early in the year. Firewatchers will be hired to keep a watch on the forests. The officials said that a fire of this proportion has been recorded for the first time in Chamundi Hills. Meanwhile, Srinivasulu, Divisional Forest Officer, said the fire has been contained, thanks to the timely action of the officials. The incident has raised concerns over the fire management system put in place by the Forest Department officials. A small fire was noticed on the hills near the steps leading to Chamundi Hills last week. Even as the raging fire engulfed large patches of forests, the officials are unable to conform the extent of damages caused by the fire. It is not known if any animals sustained burns. Forest Department officials will visit the spot on Wednesday for an inspection.
