By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, DEC. 29. The general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Harkishan Singh Surjeet, today handed over a cheque for Rs. 10 lakhs to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, towards the Prime Minister's Relief Fund. The party MPs, Nilotpal Basu and Hannan Mollah, accompanied Mr. Surjeet. They informed Dr. Singh that the party MPs would donate a month's salary to the Relief Fund for the tsunami-related relief and rehabilitation work.

The party appreciated the manner in which the Government is organising relief and rescue operations, and said it was with the Centre in the work undertaken to provide succour to those affected by the tsunami.

CPI's gesture

The Communist Party of India too has directed all its MPs, MLAs and other elected representatives to contribute a month's salary towards the relief fund set up by the party. The party has asked its units all over the country to collect money and send it immediately to the party headquarters. The drafts should be drawn in favour of the Communist Party of India, New Delhi, the party central secretariat said.

The All-India Forward Bloc also called upon its cadre, including MPs, State Ministers, legislators and others to contribute and collect money from the people for relief operations. The party said it would be sending volunteers for relief work.
