CHENNAI, JAN. 18. Member of Parliament and industrialist, M.A.M. Ramaswamy was today conferred `For the Sake of Honour Award' by the Rotary Club of Madras for his contribution towards education, literature and society. Responding to the felicitations, Mr. Ramaswamy said that his family had been involved in promoting education and literature for decades. The Annamalai University, of which he is the pro-chancellor, has about 23,000 students on its rolls now. Over 3,50,000 candidates from across the world were enrolled in the Distance Education Programme of the University. Being the centenary year of his father, M.A. Muthiah Chettiar, who was also interested in education, Mr. Ramaswamy donated Rs. 5 lakhs towards the educational projects of the Club. Presenting the award that included a citation to Mr. Ramaswamy, the club president N.K. Gopinath, recalled an incident when the awardee's father was conferred the same honour in 1985. He requested Mr. Ramasamy to become an honorary member of the club. Mr. Gopinath spoke about the club's relief operations in tsunami affected areas, including providing permanent housing to the victims. R. Ramakrishnan, former district governor spoke Mr. Ramaswamy's love for sports. He is mentioned in Guinness Book of World Record in 1985 for a record of over 400 classic wins in horse racing. Mr. Ramaswamy had also set up a 1050-bed hospital in Annamalai University for the underprivileged, he added.
