CHENNAI, JAN. 18 . EMU commuters bound for Chennai Central from Arakkonam had a miraculous escape early this morning when the train was crossing the Veysarpadi subway bridge here, thanks to the presence of mind of the motorman. The alert driver stopped the train after noticing that the track alignment was faulty. According to Chennai Division officials, a concrete mix lorry hit the ceiling of the road under bridge at Veydarpadi damaging the roof and one of the four tracks on the bridge just before the arrival of the EMU. The motorman, who noticed the damage to the rails, braked immediately, averting an accident. EMU services on the section were affected with the trains shifted to other tracks. Normal services were restored in the afternoon after the damage was rectified. The Divisional Railway Manager, N. Jayaram, said that despite repeated requests by the railways, the Chennai Corporation had failed to increase the road clearance. The railway had decided to boost clearance by excavating two feet under the bridge and charge the corporation, he said.
