CHENNAI, JAN. 18. IMMA Stone Fair 2005, featuring the monument-making capabilities of India's granite industry, will be held at the Chennai Trade Centre from January 20 to 23. Organised by the Indian Monument Manufacturers' Association (IMMA), whose members are concentrated in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, the fair will also have participants exhibiting consumables, spares and machinery. Foreign companies from Spain, Italy, China and Japan are among the exhibitors, while buyer and visitor delegations are expected from Europe, the United States, Canada, China, Singapore and New Zealand. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, the chairman of the fair organising committee, R. Veeramani, said testimonies to the craftsmanship and capabilities of the Indian monuments industry were available in the form of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, the Astronaut Memorial (Illinois-USA), the Holocaust Memorial (Washington DC), the Bruce Lee family memorial and the September 11 memorial in Chicago.
Good performance
The industry, with a mix of small, medium and big companies, was wholly export-oriented, and gave a good account of itself in the world monuments market despite constraints such as power costs, high freight costs and inflexible labour laws unsuited for catering to seasonal demand. The president of the Tamil Nadu Quarry Owners Association, Mahesh, said expeditious processing of applications for prospecting was needed for the industry to meet challenges in the world market. IMMA Stone Fair, the second in the series (the first fair having been held in 2003), will focus on business visitors and will be open to the public on January 23 only.
