BANGALORE: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited came up with a last minute goal to upstage Sports Authority of India 3-2 and enter the semifinal knock out phase of the Travancore Cup hockey tournament here on Wednesday. SAI needed only a draw to qualify and with the score at 2-2 in the 60th minute looked all set to make the last four. However, Kishore scored off an extended penalty corner in the 60th minute to register a thrilling win for HAL. Kariappa (7th), also off a penalty corner, and veteran Dominic Savio (36th) also scored for HAL. Sampath (28th) and Raghunath (47th) scored off penalty corners for SAI. Dhanraj Ballal Hockey Academy beat Indian Telephone Industries 4-3 but it was not enough to qualify for the last four. Maratta Light Infantry made the last four on goal difference, as the point's tally was level after completion of the league matches. DBHA's scorers in the match against ITI were Surendra (3rd and 57th), Naresh (47th, off a penalty corner) and Hari Govind (56th). Scorers for ITI were Rajendra (19th and 44th) and Somaiah (32nd). All ITI's goals were off penalty corners. In an inconsequential match Central Excise and MEG (Boys) played out a 2-2 draw. Jeevan Chengappa (18th) and Ajay Aiyappa (25th) scored for Central Excise and Rahul (44th) and Vinayak (57th) scored off penalty corners for MEG (Boys) Thursday is a rest day for the tournament and the semifinal knockout phase commences on Friday.
Narrow win for SBI
M.V. Prashanth's five-wicket haul and S. Prakash's 41 set up State Bank of India's one-wicket victory over Advocate Association in a KSCA Group II, second division league match here recently. Advocate Association, powered by Vivek Reddy's 67, scored 256 and SBI surpassed the target with 11 deliveries to spare. The scores: Advocate Association 256 in 46.5 overs (Vivek Reddy 67, Suhas 54, M.V. Prashanth five for 25) lost to SBI 257 for nine in 48.1 overs (S. Prakash 41).
NFL 2nd div. final round
The final round of the ONGC National Football League's second division championship will be held at Bangalore from April 25. Six teams Army XI, Vasco Sports Club, Churchill Brothers, SBT, TFA and HAL will figure in this round. The top two teams will qualify for the NFL's first division championship.
KBAD team for Israel
The Karnataka Badminton Association for the Disabled will send a three member team Ramesh Tikaram, Anand Boregowda and Anil Almeda for the Israel Open Championship scheduled to be held at Jerusalem from March 23 to 26.
GAT bags volleyball title
The GAT College defeated Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering 25-14, 25-19 and claimed the Viswesarya Technological University's inter-collegiate volleyball championship. Earlier in the semifinals, DSCE beat GCE 25-18, 25-18 and GAT humbled the host BNMIT 25-14, 25-9.
Century Club wins
The Century Club defeated Malleswaram Association 3-0 in the third inter-club invitation badminton championship being conducted here by the Century Club. The results: Century Club bt Malleswaram Association 3-0 (Sadhashiva Karanth-Sanjeev bt Rakesh-Girish 15-3, 15-2; Sumit-Suresh Raju bt Dinesh-Gopal 15-6, 15-7; Prithviraj-Belliappa bt Prabhu-Raghavendra 15-5,15-4).
