TIRUCHI: With the poll fever catching up, law enforcers in seven districts and in Tiruchi city, coming under the Central Zone, are gearing up to make adequate security arrangements to check any untoward incident on the eve and on the day of the election. Though a comprehensive bandobust plan for each district as well as for Tiruchi city will take some more time, the police have already begun preliminary works connected with poll preparedness. The Central Zone comprises of Tiruchi (Rural), Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Perambalur, Karur, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts, besides Tiruchi city with 43 Assembly segments in the region. While concentrating on bandobust measures, police organised election related meetings with representatives of political parties seeking their cooperation for the smooth conduct of polls. In Tiruchi, the city police conducted meetings recently in which parties were advised to strictly adhere to the model code of conduct. An election cell is already in place at the Office of the Commissioner of Police as well as in neighbouring Pudukottai to take stock of various things, including the number of polling stations, the strength of the police, force requirement for each polling station in the respective Assembly constituencies, etc.
Arms check
Not to take any chance, the police have embarked on a drive against those possessing illegal arms, besides checking the licensed explosive shops in Tiruchi and Thanjavur ranges, where the overall police strength is around 9,000. Arrests have been made in Tiruchi (Rural) where two persons were held on Tuesday on the charge of illegally possessing country made single barrel muzzle loading gun without any valid licence. Directions have been given to those owning guns with licence to deposit their weapons at the police stations concerned until the completion of election process. This apart, the police are also on the job of apprehending those against whom non-bailable warrants are pending. The task of identifying trouble-prone, sensitive and hyper-sensitive areas, is also on in the districts based on previous incidents and past records.
