J&K Government to release detenus

They were booked under Public Safety Act

New Delhi: The Jammu and Kashmir Government in consultation with the Union Home Ministry announced on Wednesday the release of 40 detenus booked under Public Safety Act from various jails in the country

These people were booked under Public Safety Act.

The decision to release them was taken after a meeting between Centre and State officials in Jammu. It also followed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's directives during the round table conference convened by him on Kashmir on February 25.

The Jammu and Kashmir Government had submitted a list of more than 400 detenus for screening, out of which names of 40 cases were cleared, officials said.

During the round table conference, Dr. Singh had asked Home Minister Shivraj Patil to form a high level committee of officials to examine all current cases of detention and release detenus who did not face serious charges by March 31. Following this, the Government revived a high level committee headed by the Special Secretary in the Union Home Ministry, the State Chief Secretary, and the Financial Commissioner (Home), the State police chief and the Additional Director General (CID) as its members. they said.
