Government to form working group on PSUs

Industries Department takes steps to revive PSUs

KOCHI: Industries Minister Elamaram Karim has announced constitution of a working group on State public sector undertakings (PSUs) in the light of the discussions that were held as part of a convention of the chief executive officers of Government-owned companies in the State here on Monday.

The working group, chaired by T. Balakrishnan, Principal Secretary (Industries and Commerce), will codify the results of the discussions. CEOs of leading PSUs like the Kerala State Electricity Board, Kerala State Road Transport Corporation, Kerala Tourism Development Corporation, etc., will be on the working group. It will draw up an action plan and do the follow-up on the plans.

A circular codifying the discussions would be issued to CEOs of all PSUs in the State immediately, said the Minister at the end of the convention.

Earlier in the day, inaugurating the convention, the Minister said the Industries Department would honour the best PSUs and CEOs on an annual basis. Employees or groups of employees in PSUs that made special achievements or innovations also would be honoured.

The annual awards are meant to honour the PSUs, CEOs and the employees who make the best use of their talent and resources to improve the performance of the Government-owned companies.

The Minister also released a book prepared by the Kerala Bureau of Industrial Promotion that has a list of PSUs, their addresses, specialisation and products. The book is meant to help improve coordination and cooperation among the PSUs.

The Minister said that the PSUs should to rise in efficiency to be able to compete with the private undertakings. This is part of the efforts by the Industries Department to revive the PSUs and to improve their performance.

The Minister called for energy audits in all the PSUs as part of the steps to improve the efficiency of the companies and cost cutting.

Mr. Karim said that the PSUs should not fail in making statutory payments.
