Grosjean tames Mathieu

LYON: Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean beat compatriot Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-3, 7-6 to reach the second round of the Lyon indoor tournament on Monday.

Sixth seed Grosjean's consistent baseline saw him overcome Mathieu's challenge in one hour and 39 minutes.

The Marseille player will take on a qualifier in his next match as he faces the winner of Tuesday's tie between France's Cyril Saulnier and Colombia's Alejandro Falla.

Melzer loses

Eighth-seeded Austrian Juergen Melzer was beaten 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 by Czech Lukas Dlouhy in the first round of the St. Petersburg Open on Monday.

Finland's fifth seed Jarkko Nieminen saw off unseeded Janko Tipsarevich of Serbia 7-5, 6-2 to reach the second round of the $1-million event.

Nieminen will now meet Potito Starace, who beat fellow Italian Daniele Bracciali 6-3, 6-3.

South Africa's Wesley Moodie eliminated Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 in another first-round clash.

Peer advances

Shahar Peer beat Marion Bartoli of France 6-3, 7-6(4) on Monday in the first round at the Generali Ladies at Linz, Austria.

The 22nd-ranked Israeli, who is now 5-0 against the 19th-ranked Bartoli, broke serve three times in the first set and led 3-0 in the second.

But Bartoli broke back and led 3-0 in the tiebreaker before Peer won six points in a row.
