NEW DELHI: Last year's runner-up Indian Oil clinched the last qualification berth in the National hockey championship qualifying round for associate members at the National Stadium here on Tuesday. Indian Oil outplayed Steel Authority of India Limited 8-1 after leading 2-0 at the interval. It was the second win in the three-member Group D for Indian Oil following its 7-1 triumph over Central Reserve Police Force. Defending champion Punjab & Sind Bank, Air-India and Namdhari XI were the other three teams to qualify for the main tournament to be played in Jalandhar from Oct. 28 to Nov. 3. They will be joined by eight more teams, which are going through the qualification process at different venues. On a pleasant afternoon, Indian Oil missed a lot more than it scored, but struck telling blows in the second half to overwhelm SAIL. Sardara Singh opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a reverse hit. Five minutes from half time, Deepak Thakur capitalised on a pass from Bharat Kinaria to increase the tally. After the break, Prabhjot Singh and Deepak Thakur were the standout performers, with both scoring three goals each. SAIL managed to pull one back to save its face as it converted its third penalty corner through Jerome Lakra. PTI reports: At Amritsar, Andhra Pardesh trounced Andaman Nicobar 28-1at the Guru Nanak Dev University ground. M. Ajay Babu scored nine goals, while K.V. Laxmi Narayan and Ramesh Krishna netted four goals each. Captain K. Suresh and A. Lakshmi Srinivas shot home three goals each and K. Satya Maheshwar Rao, G. Jasuva and Suresh scored once each. Andaman captain Amrit Ekka reduced the margin. In another match, Madhya Bharat beat Uttaranchal 5-1. Madyha Bharat skipper Hasrat Quershi scored two goals. Meanwhile, Manipur overcame Vidrabha 6-4. K.H. Jayanta (16th, 22nd), K. Hera (26th, 56th, 31st) and L. Herojit (17th) scored for the winning team, while Dhiraj Wagh (11th), Irshad (52nd), Athar (55th) and Nimit Lal (69th) reduced the margin. In another match, Punjab outclassed Maharashtra 7-1.Mumbai beat Karnataka 5-1, riding on goals by Stanley Fernandes (18th, 23rd), Hemant Lethe (39th), Jasdev Singh (43rd) and Vikas Pillai (55th), while Laxman Rao (62nd) reduced the margin.
