KOTTAYAM: Host Girideepam `A' scored an easy 52-26 win over Rajagiri HSS, Kalamassery and entered the boys' semifinals of the 16th Girideepam Trophy all-India inter-school basketball tournament here on Saturday. Mar Thoma HSS, Chungathara, St.Thomas HSS, Pala, Don Bosco HSS, Irinjalakuda, St. Mary's HSS, Champakulam, Cherupushpam HSS, Chandanakampara and St. Joseph's HSS, Bangalore entered the quarterfinals at the end the league stage. In the girls' section, the teams to make the last eight were Mount Carmel HSS, Kottayam, Little Flower HSS, Koratty, Kristhu Jyothi HSS, Changanassery, Lady Sivasammy HSS, Chennai, Mount Carmel, Bangalore, St. Joseph's HSS, Alappuzha and Cherupushpam HSS, Chandanakampara.

Arjun takes title
S. Arjun (NSS) won the sub-junior boys' singles title in the Thiruvananthapuram district table tennis tournament at the YMCA hall in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturaday. In the final, Arjun defeated M.S. Arun (YMCA) 11-6, 11-9, 9-11, 11-2. M. Unnikrishnan (NKM) won the title in cadet section after getting the better of team-mate Renjith Benny 6-11, 11-5, 11-9, 5-11, 16-14 in the final. R. Saina (YMCA) won the cadet girls' singles title after defeating S. Surumi 7-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-6. NSS remains champion
The NSS Hindu College (Changanassery), with an all-win record in the four-team league, retained the men and women's titles in the Mahatma Gandhi University inter-collegiate ball badminton championship at the SAM Training College, Poothotta, on Friday. The NSS men defeated SNM (Maliankara), Maharaja's (Ernakulam) and St. Stephen's (Uzhavoor) in the league, while its women beat SNM, St. Stephen's and Devamatha (Kuravilangad) to win the title for the eighth consecutive year in both the sections.
Ernakulam advances
Two early goals helped Ernakulam defeat Kasargod 2-1 and enter the semifinal of the 33rd State junior football championship at the St. George School Ground in Thodupuzha on Saturday. In the other quarterfinal, Thrissur beat Kottayam 1-0. The results: Quarterfinals: Ernakulam 2 (Einstein 7th, Jibin 28th) bt Kasargod 1 (Byjesh 18th). Thrissur 1 (Pinto 14th) bt Kottayam 0. Friday's matches: Idukki 1 (Faizal 2nd) bt Palakkad 0; Kozhikode bt Malappuram 4-1 in tie-breaker (regulation period 1-1).
Athletic meet
The Mahatma Gandhi University inter-collegiate athletic championship for men and women will be held at the St. Paul's College Ground, Kalamassery, near Kochi, from Nov.16 to 18.
Kannur takes lead
Kannur took the first innings lead against Kasaragod in the two-day North Zone (under-17) inter-district cricket championship match, which ended in a draw at the Medical College Ground in Kozhikode on Saturday. The scores: Kasaragod 123 and 88 for one in 17 overs (P.M. Ansal 42 not out) drew with Kannur 131 in 49.4 overs (Saiz Haroon 48, P.M. Ansal three for 25, Jaswan Famnaz three for 27, Mohammed Shabil three for 31).
KV teams triumph
Kendriya Vidyalaya (Cochin Port Trust) blanked Toc-H (Vytilla) 3-0 to win the inter-school boys title in the Ernakulam District table tennis championship at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Kadvanthra, on Saturday. In the girls' section, Kendriya Vidyalaya (Naval Base) defeated Toc-H 3-0 and bagged the title. The results: Inter-school championship: Finals: Boys: KV `A' (Cochin Port Trust) bt Toc-H `A' (Vytilla) 3-0 (Sharath Raj bt T.M. Nakul 11-9, 15-13, 11-9; Rahul bt Paul Albert 11-4, 4-11, 11-5, 11-3; Rajeesh bt Chetan Santosh 11-3, 11-7, 4-11, 11-9). SB College scores win
SB College, Changanassery defeated arch-rival Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram to win the men's title in the SKVC Diamond Jubilee celebrations all-India inter-collegiate basketball tournament at the SKVC floodlit stadium on Saturday. In a closely contested match, SB College prevailed 76-68 with Dibumon top scoring with 24 points. For Mar Ivanios College, Akbar (15) did the bulk of scoring. The results: SB College, Changanassery 76 (Dibu Mon 24, Siju Kuriakose 19) bt Mar Ivanios college, Thiruvananthapuram 68 (Akbar 15, Jerald 14).
