Centre Of Excellence downs Postal

Bangalore: Centre of Excellence (COE) defeated Postal 4-1 in a Deccan Herald State `A' division hockey league match at the KSHA Stadium here on Saturday evening.

Anup Kino struck in the fifth minute to put COE ahead. Kumar (22nd min.), Julian Vasanth (37th min.) and G. Gordon (44th min.) later added to the tally. For Postal, Vivek scored in the 40th minute.

In another match, HAL defeated ITI 2-0. Rajesh and Babu scored for HAL. Sunday is a rest day for the tournament.

Vishwanathan wins title

N. Vishwanathan, with a net score of 40 points, won the title in the 60-69 age-category in the Bangalore Golf Club' championship for seniors at the BGC course here on Saturday. About 100 players participated in the tournament played on a Stableford format of single round of 18 holes with full handicap.

The senior most golfer in the tournament was the 88-year old Col (retd) C.M. Belliappa.

The winners: 60 to 69 years: N. Vishwanathan (40 pts). 70 to 79: Maj. Gen.(retd) S.N. Manoharan (41 pts). 80 and above - nine holes: C.E. Narayan Rao (18 pts).

Ladies: Uma Maney (42 pts).

Double for Advani

Pankaj Advani made it a creditable double. With an authoritative 79-10, 86-46, 114-0 win over fellow ONGC cueist Alok Kumar, Pankaj added the snooker title to the billiards honours that he won on Friday, in the 3rd PSPB inter-unit billiards and snooker championship at the KSBA hall in Bangalore.

Meanwhile in the 37th senior state ranking snooker championship in progress here, Sharan Rajani squeaked past Goutham Kalro 49-38, 62-37, 21-63, 29-66, 66-17.

Other results: G. Prashanth bt H.S. Neelakanta 71-28, 55-35, 40-42, 22-41, 58-12; Rawoof Ur Rehman bt A. Rajuhari 65-25, 43-54, 61-26, 38-40, 54-25; A. Sunil Kumar bt S. Vidyodaya, Bagini win

Vidyodaya High School, TN Pura, and Bagini Seva Samaja High School took the honours in the boys and girls' sections respectively in the Mysore Mail-sponsored district-level road relay race (1.5km x4) at Mysore on Saturday.

The results: High school boys (1.5km x4): 1. Vidyodaya HS (TN Pura), 2. Demonstration HS (Mysore), 3. Marimallappa's HS `B'. Higher primary school (1kmx4): 1. Vidya Vardhaka Sangha BM Shree HPS, 2. St. Thomas HPS, 3. Baden Powell HS.

High school girls': 1. Bagini Seva Samaja HS (Mysore), 2. CFTRI, 3. Sri Adhichunchanagiri HS. Higher primary school: 1. Vidya Vardhaka Sangha BM Shree HPS, 2. Marimallappa's HS, 3. DMS (Mysore).

Javeed Ahamed passes away

Javed Ahamed (52), founder and Secretary of Citizen English School, Nanjangud, passed away at the Vikram Hospital, Mysore, following a cardiac arrest.

Javeed was a sports promoter and was the office-bearer of the Karnataka Amateur Throwball Association and Mysore District Kho-kho Association. He is survived by his wife and two sons. The Mysore District Kho-kho Association condoled the death of Mr. Javeed Ahamed.
