UDF all set to launch series of agitations

Special Correspondent

UDF convener P.P. Thankachan gives details of the stir.

Thiruvananthapuram: The United Democratic Front (UDF) is all set for its five-hour dharna before the Secretariat on January 16, setting off the first in a series of agitations against the Left Democratic Front rule. The focus will be on three key issues — price rise, deterioration of law and order situation and the crisis in the agricultural sector.

The decision to go on an agitation mode was taken at the UDF high power committee meeting recently. Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the dharna. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala, UDF leaders K.M. Mani, P.K. Kunhalikutty, K.R. Gouri, R. Balakrishna Pillai, M.V. Raghavan, Babu Divakaran, Shibu Baby John, other members of the UDF HPC, State leaders and party office-bearers of all coalition partners, district presidents, MLAs and office-bearers of feeder organisations would participate in the dharna, UDF convener P.P. Thankachan said here on Saturday.

The Thiruvananthapuram District Congress Committee, being the host district, held its meeting here to plan out ways to make the dharna a success, besides mobilising the party rank and file for the dharna. The other coalitions have also been holding meetings to contribute their mite to the success of the dharna. Meetings of Congress feeder organisations, including the Youth Congress and the Kerala Students' Union, were held at the KPCC during the last couple of days.

The UDF plans to follow up its Secretariat dharna by a two-way march to focus on the poor state of M.C. Road following the controversy over the implementation of the Kerala State Transport Project. The two-way march would start from Chadayamangalam to Kottarakara and from Chengannur to Kottarakara on January 31 and February 1 respectively covering 150 km. The march will conclude with a massive public meeting.

In the coming days, the UDF will launch similar agitations focussing on problems faced by various regions.

The UDF leadership has also convened a meeting of all its workers in the cooperative sector to discuss strategies to thwart the CPI (M)-led attempts to topple elected cooperative bodies under the auspices of the LDF Government.
