BANGALORE: Nearly 5,000 candidates appeared for a walk-in written test and interview for jobs in business process outsourcing (BPO) companies under the Suvarna Kayaka Udyoga Shikshana Scheme of the Industries Department at Maharani's Arts and Science colleges here on Saturday. Speaking after inaugurating the walk-in written test and interview here, Minister for Industries Katta Subramanya Naidu said the programme was part of the State Government's plan to provide employment to one lakh unemployed youth before March 31. Undergraduates and graduates from Bangalore Urban and Rural, Kolar and Tumkur districts had appeared for the test. The selected candidates would be offered jobs by February 15, the Minister pointed out. Infosys Technologies Ltd. and 16 other information technology and BPO companies participated in the programme. Mr. Subramanya Naidu said the department had planned to organise a similar programme on January 28 when written test and interview for engineering graduates would be held.
Test
To provide jobs in the textile industry, it had been decided to conduct a written and oral test in the first week of February. Nearly 25,000 unemployed youth would be provided jobs in the textile industry before March 31.
NGOs' support
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) had been roped in to impart training to the youth. The department had conducted written test and interview for 300 youth at R.C. College here on December 30, 2006. As many as 135 candidates had been selected and they would be offered jobs soon, the Minister said. He said the department would realise its promise of providing jobs to one lakh unemployed youth before March 31. The Government was aware of the talent in the State, and the scheme to train candidates in upgrading skills had been launched. Training would be given to them at 30 centres across the State, he said. Mr. Subramanya Naidu said under the scheme, a stipend of Rs. 1,500 would be given to each candidate. A sum of Rs. 750 a month would be provided by the Government and Rs. 750 by industries and organisations that provided training. Associations such as the Confederation of Indian Industry, Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and the Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association had extended their cooperation for the effective implementation of the scheme, the Minister pointed out. The scheme would be extended to Belgaum, Dharwad, Gulbarga, Mangalore and Hassan districts in the next phase. The Government would earmark Rs. 160 crore in the next budget for skill development and creation of employment opportunities for the youth, Mr. Subramanya Naidu said. Infosys Technologies Director (Human Resources) T.V. Mohandas Pai was present.
