Tulu folk heritage
KOTI CHENNAYA PARDANA SAMPUTA Legendary Twins, Koti Chennaya Pardana: Damodaran Kalmady Editor; Published by Kannada Pusthaka Pradhikara, Chamarajpet, Bangalore. Rs. 200.
THIS BOOK has for its focus and centrepiece the legendary twins Koti Chennaya and their deeds of valour, their life and career as role models in Tulu heritage and their lionisation and deification.
The work elaborately gives a vivid exposition of the folk art of Pardana, which is part of the Tulu cultural and literary heritage. It is described variously by scholars as compositions essentially invocatory in nature. The themes of the compositions Pardana are centred on the worship and glorification of the popular folk deities of the Tulu people.
The chronicle is dealt with in three elaborate chapters in verse carrying its own distinct grammar and construction regimen. The Tulu text in short sentences is followed by a Kannada version. This helps in easy appreciation of the excellent content including "Dharma", "Nyaya", mysteries of creation and human value system. The work is described as a monumental achievement of the Kannada Book Authority intended to preserve and protect the Tulu folk heritage from the ravages of time and neglect.
