Financial aspects
Sir, In his write-up on `Maintaining and developing universities' (Feb. 26), Mr. K. Venkatasubramaniam has considered several ideas to meet the rather grave financial situation faced by the universities. It is rather strange that the prevalence of all-pervasive corruption rampant in the universities has not been discussed. Unless effective measures are initiated to check the canker of corruption, higher education cannot acquire a competitive edge, as there is considerable degradation of quality standards, thanks to corrupt practices prevalent in many universities. A high-level commission is required to probe into the financial aspects of functioning as an urgent measure before dreaming on any development or miracle to take place. It should be ensured that these bodies for higher education are developed as self-supporting institutions.

Sir, The suggestions given by K.Venkatasubramaniam for improving the finances of our universities need to be seriously studied by our educationists. Private donations and endowments, strengthening community participation and establishing industry-university linkages are some of the concrete ideas suggested by the author.
Private sector has a greater role to play in maintaining the quality of education in the context of the increasing trend towards privatisation. Private educational institutions should in their interest shed their greed for money and open their gates to meritorious but less affluent candidates. They should vie with each other in attracting the best studen
If the private colleges on the other hand turn a blind eye to the merit and base their admissions solely on the basis of donations received, the quality of the products turned out by them will bring disrepute and tarnish the image of the institutions. Private donations and finance from industry will automatically pour in if the educational institutions build up a tradition of excellence.
