A touch of period charm
Enviable marble topped centre tables made out of carved pillar bases.
ACCENT FURNITURE with a whiff of nostalgia is on view at an interesting `niche' exhibition currently on at Contemporary Arts and Crafts, 41, C.P. Ramaswami Road, Alwarpet.
The `Nostalgia' furniture, put together by Bharati Mahendra and Nandini Ramachandran, focuses on old carved Chettinad pillar bases, period tiles, antique wooden staircase railings and antique beds to fashion consoles, divans, chairs, centre and coffee tables, lamps and so on.
For functional, modern interiorscapes with a touch of period charm, this is the exhibition to visit.
Well-crafted jute cloth... equisite contribution by the victims of Bhopal gas tragedy.
The furniture items are simple. Carved pillar bases made into marble and glass topped coffee and centre tables vie for attention with unusual three-seaters made out of slatted bedheads.
The glass wall shelves supported by pieces of carved staircase railings are particularly attractive as are low lamp bases made out of small carved wooden squares.
Interesting, minimally carved old door pieces have been used with some effect as mirror frames, sofa backs and even centre tables.
Attractive lampshades...
Old Chettinad tiles have been used on very pretty consoles and half consoles which can be mounted on the wall, as well as a range of hexagonal tables, tiny peg tables, corner stands and so on.
Other attractions at the exhibition are ethereal looking, well-crafted jute cloth and cane `chiks' made by the victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy.
The `Nostalgia' exhibition ends on January 18.
