Devotional atmosphere

THE VOCAL recital of Palghat K. V. Naranaswamy well supported by Padma Narayanaswami featured by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams' Information Centre, T. Nagar, as inaugural concert in its Dhanurmasa Sangeetha Utsavam gave an experience of the enthralling effect of serene Carnatic music in a devotional atmosphere.

The veteran vocalist's mature conception of classical aesthetics came in for admiration during his detailed description of Karaharapriya in a chaste form. It was followed by an insightful exposition of the piece, "Srinivasa Thava" of Papanasam Sivan.

The piece was completed with a spell of rapturous neraval and swara passages, all richly reflective of the raga's radiance. The singer's rendition of the piece, "Saragunapalimpa" of Ramanathapuram Srinivasa Iyengar in Kedaragowlai was in an intensely delightful diction. The musician's elaboration of Todi was moving.

S. Varadarajan provided smooth accompaniment on the violin. His account of Todi was in a tasteful style. Manoj Siva (mridangam) and H. Sivaramakrishnan (ghatam) skilfully accompanied the recital.
