Subtle support

NEYVELI SANTHANAGOPALAN, singing for Tyaga Brahma Gana Sabha, benefited from the serene support of the accompanists. Embar Kannan on the violin and T. V. Gopalakrishnan on the mridangam enabled the vocalist to engage himself in a sedate communication of the contents of his recital.

Santhanagopalan's descriptions of Harikambodi and Todi were subtle. He rendered ``Muruga'' (Thanjavur Sankara Iyer) and ``Dasarathi'' (Tyagaraja), in a tonally controlled style aimed at a reposeful expression of their musical details. Embar Kannan elated the audience with his vivid portrayal of Harikambodi and Todi. A recipient of the title, `Vani Kalasundhakara' awarded by the sabha this year, T. V. Gopalakrishnan embellished the recital with his rhythmic percussion accompaniment.
