Incredible artefacts from Orissa


Beautifully sculpted sandstone idols...

THE MAGNIFICENT craft heritage of Orissa comes alive at `The Great Orissa Arts and Crafts Mela' organised by Utkalika at Sri Sankara (Mini) Hall, 267, TTK road. From magnificent sandstone statues to the loveliest of filigree work itemsthe exhibition offers a distinctive festive shopping experience to Chennaiites. Among the exhibits on display at Utkalika are beautifully sculpted sandstone icons. The tiny stone figures and artefacts, also from Orissa, reflect the sculpture of another genre.Enormous silk wall hangings depict scenes from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. Also seen are exquisitely executed palm leaf paintings and greeting cards.

Colourful garden umbrellas, with Orissa's famous `Pipli patch work' are a prime attraction at Sankara Hall. The textiles of Orissa take one into a dazzling world of intricate weaves, unique designs and motifs _ double ikkat on Bomkai, Katki and Sambhal-puri cotton and silk saris, dupattas and yardage. The tussar, Sambhalpuri and Katki saris have distinct woven borders and floral bird and animal motifs.

Utkalika's exhibition-cum-sale of Orissa's Handicrafts and Handwoven textiles concludes on January 15.
