Refreshing veena recital

P. VASANTHKUMAR'S recital on the veena featured by Nayaki at the Thakkar Baba Vidyalaya in T. Nagar adhered to a graceful style of instrumental music.

His rendition of the piece, "Nenendu" (Karnataka Behag) and "Varanarada" (Vijayasree) of Tyagaraja was pleasing. Vasanthkumar conveyed the details of Bhairavi focussing its grace and grandeur.

The artiste's crisp and intricate representation of swaras in conclusion of the piece, ``Chinthayama'' was especially commendable.

The Ragam, Thanam and Pallavi (adi tala) comprised catchy phrases drawn from Valaji and Hindolam. The artiste's execution of a tarangam in Ahiri and javali in Kapi reflected his grasp of their captivating musical contents.

Kallidaikurichi Sivakumar (mridangam) and G. Ravichandran (ghatam) followed the recital with fitting rhythmical expressions. — R.V.
