Antique glory

FOR THOSE who have not inherited the grandmother's `raakudi' or a distant uncle's `sarpech' there is hope in the active jewellery `revival' movement which is now beginning to gain ground. Foremost in this field is the house of Jugal Kishore which specialises in jewellery reproduction with specially commissioned pieces which come as close to the original as is possible in look, design, format, setting and craftsmanship. `We have some genuine old pieces too, says Ashok Kumar, as he proudly points out to some sensational `kemp' ruby bangles. But most of the pieces you see are made to order, by Chettinadu craftspersons who take months to finish a piece, as in the old days'. Among the many reproductions of ruby, emerald and diamond, bullaks, `naths' `raakudis' and hair ornaments one can see the craftsman's quest for perfection and a passion for detailing. Old crafts like enamelling have also been revived by the House of Jugal Kishore, whose primary intention is to see that old jewellery does not die out.

Reproduction of antique silver jewellery pieces can also be seen at the Jugal Kishore showroom at 44, (old No. 73) C. P. Ramaswamy Road, Kalpataru Complex, Alwarpet. PUSHPA CHARI
