Capital's homage
The Union Minister for Tourism, Jagmohan, inaugurating the Tyagaraja Music and Dance festival at New Delhi.
THE DELHI-BASED Sree Shanmukhananda Sangeetha Sabha has been celebrating Tyagaraja Music and Dance Festival regularly. This time round, the festival is being held in two parts. While round one was held from February 15 to 18 in association with the Resident Commissioner of Andhra Pradesh Government here, there will be a second round of festivities for four days concluding February 25.
Like in previous years, the festival has attracted the best of Carnatic music and dance exponents. Among important programmes scheduled to be held in round two is a flute recital by Sikkil Mala Chandrasekhar on February 23. Others who have given or will be giving performances include Kadri Gopalnath, Gayathri Venkatraghavan, Nimrita Narasimhan, Lakshmi Rangarajan, Nityashree Mahadevan, Lata Ramchand and Geetha Rajasekhar.
There were two special events as part of the festival, the first one of which was held on Friday last. Based on the compositions of Tyagaraja, Lakshmi Vishwanathan gave a Bharatanatyam performance entitled ''Rama Bhakti''. On February 23, there will be another Bharatnatyam performance entitled ''Namamritha Sagaram'' -- a thematic presentation by Chitra Visveswaran.
This time, the Sabha has also taken the opportunity to honour eminent classical musicians and dancers. While the eminent saxophone exponent Kadri Gopalnath was presented with the Natya Kalanidhi award, the other awardees were S. Sowmya (Nadabhushanam), Adyar K. L. Lakshman and Lakshmi Vishwanathan (Natya Ratna) and Rama Vaidyanathan (Natya Ilavarasi).
