Spell-binding alaap

SONY NAD N2R01514 - Hindustani Classical Music - Sampradaya - Kishori Amonkar - Rs. 200. ALTV Marathi and Lok Satta double cassette.

THE PRE-EMINENCE of vocalist Kishori Amonkar in the field of Hindustani music, and her emergence as a role model for aspiring youngsters are undisputed. Her live concert at Kensington Hall, London 2000, has been recorded in a double album released by Sony Nad. This recording has been dedicated to the artiste's mother and Guru, Mogubai Kurdikar, who was a disciple of the legendary Ustad Alladiya Khan, founder of the Jaipur Atrauli Gharana. The artiste's alaap of Raga Alhaiya Bilaival that belongs to the Bilaival Thaal, which is absolutely inspirational, and a vilambit bandish in Teen Taal that refers to the soul of the devotee seeking solace from the Almighty are spell binding.

The Dhrut Khyal in Teen Taal with the singer's voice soaring effortlessly in the higher octave is reflective of a keen musical mind, a discerning capacity to comprehend and analyse beyond the mediocre. ``Kavana Bataria Gailo Mai'' with fast swinging sequences sung with exquisite melody is a listener's delight. The second volume is introduced with an alaap of Jaunpuri that has its origin from the Asaveri Thaat. A medium paced composition, also in Teen Taal, ``Chananana Bicchuva'' with flawless brilliant taans keeps the musical till brimming. The programme reaching its zenith with a Bhajan in Sindhubhairavi set to a lilting cycle of 6 beats, has the listener swaying with its aesthetic magic. The vocal support lent by Vidya Bhagwat, the accompaniment on the harmonium by Purushottam Walawalkar, on the tabla by Balakrishna Iyer and Milind Raikar on the violin merit appreciation.
