Clear musical perception

THE PERFORMANCE of Sangeetha Sivakumar for raga Tarangini was marked by clear musical perception. In the alapana of Sankarabharanam, which happened to be the main item, she exploited all the sampradaya sancharas to present a passionate interpretation. The delineation of Sankarabharanam and earlier Poorvikalyani was done with astonishing vigour, though somewhat strained in the tara sthayi region, while expressing the twists and turns of her manodharma. The kirtana list too was such as to contribute to the dignified level of the concert. The Ravichandrika song, ``Maakelara-Vichaaramu,'' gave a flying start, but perhaps feeling she had to restrain the propensity to speed, Sangeetha chose to render the Bhairavi swarajati, ``Kaamaakshi,'' which helped her strike a balance between pace and poise. The Poorvikalyani item ``Aananda-Natamaaduvar'' was routinely gone through. The cutcheri at this stage reached maturity to launch the ensemble of Sankarabharanm ragam, Kirtana ``Enduku-Peddala'', neraval and swarams. By the way she structured the recital she revealed that over the years she has gained enough experience to balance her programme without making it unduly light or unduly heavy.

S. Varadarajan's accompaniment was to the point and in Sankarabharanam, he touched aesthetic levels after the vocalist's arresting raga imagery.

Mannarkoil Balaji's mridangam appeared to be a model in percussive support, punching where necessary and sounding gentle where the main artiste softened her tonal expression. On the whole a performance after which the rasikas felt well-rewarded.
