THE INFLUENCE that Lord Srinivasa wields over people all over the country and even in far off lands, where temples have been built for Him, is so great that one can come across numerous temples dedicated to Him while travelling down South. One among them is the temple at Perungalathur, two km South West of Tambaram.
Also known as Vandai Thondai and Bhaktapuri, the area was a small village 50 years ago. With industrial units located there, the area became a hub of activity and many residential colonies also sprang up. And it was decided to build a temple. Sri Vedanta Desika Darsana Sabha was formed and a site for the proposed temple was acquired in 1966. It took nearly a decade and in June 1977 the temple for Lord Srinivasa, named Bhaktapureesan, was constructed with munificent donations from the devout public.
Starting first with the construction of the shrine for Lord Srinivasa in 1977, shrines for Sri Padmavathi Thayar and Sri Andal were added in 1981. Meanwhile shrines for Sri Anjaneyar, Sri Desika and Sri Sudarsana were constructed and idols installed in them. Twenty-five years have passed since the holy task was begun and shrines for Sri Nammazhwar, Thirumangai Azhwar and Sri Ramanuja have been constructed. As is the wont in such temples, a five-tier Rajagopuram has been built, with each tier costing Rs. 2 lakhs. The entire temple premise has been spruced up at a total cost of Rs.15 lakhs and the Jeernodharana Mahasamprokshanam is to take place on March 24.
Pancharathra Agama experts, Purisai Sridharachariar of Tiruvallur, Sri Rajam Bhattar of Kanchipuram Devarajaswami Temple, Azhisur Parthasarathy Swami of Ashtalakshmi Temple and others will perform the Samprokshanam.
The events began with Mruthsangrahanam on the evening of March 20. Shanthi Homam and other rituals will be performed on all days. The Mahasamprokshanam will take place at 7.15 a.m. on Sunday, which will be followed by Thirukkalyanam at 3 pm. The Lord, with His Consorts, will be taken in procession at 7.30 p.m.
There will be music performances on all days including saxophone recital by Kadri Gopalnath on Saturday night and discourses by great scholars on all days.
