Bright prospects
Uday Singh.
IN THIS brief chat, Uday Singh, India chief, Columbia Tristar, talks about the Hollywood scene in India.
How big is the Hollywood film market in India?
The English film market in India continues to be at the top end about five to seven per cent of the total Indian Box office. The market is product driven and when we have good product the English film market improves.
The trade says that the dubbing boom has gone bust. Is it true?
The dubbing boom in our opinion has not gone bust. In fact we, at Columbia are dubbing more pictures than we ever did before. The only difference is that we have set up a grass roots distribution model and therefore do not sell our pictures to middlemen.
What is the profile of the Indian audience?
Over 75 per cent of the film going audience is between 16-34 years of age. As you would expect, the Hollywood filmgoer would come from key cities. However the dubbed versions allow us to reach the lower strata as well.
What is the future of the Hollywood trade in India?
We are very bullish about the prospects of English films in India and with multiplexing around the corner and the `rightsizing' of theatre capacities we have created a distribution network that is very well poised to seize any opportunity.
