Ideal for summer

GIVING A cool touch to the searing summer days is Poompuhar's (Anna Salai) special summer collection exhibition of ``Saris of India." Although not quite representative of all parts of India, the moderately priced saris present an attractive variety of textures and weaves to choose from, ranging from Lucknow's chikanwork mulls and soft Mangalgiris to West Bengal's Tanghails, cotton Upaddas from Venkatagiri, block printed fine cotton saris from Madhya Pradesh and so on. The Bagh block prints, presented at the exhibition cum sale are unusually attractive and come in deep jewel tones.

The fine Venkatagiris and Mangalgiris span a gamut of colours as do the lovely cotton Garhwals with zari borders, perfect for summer festive occasions. For those who favour silk there is much to admire. Also showcased are richly embroidered Kantha saris along with salwar kurta yardage in both cotton and silk. The "Saris of India" exhibition is on till May 28.
