Exquisite Rajasthani repertoire

THE COLOURS and creativity of Rajasthan come alive on wood, silk, cotton, glass, marble, leather and paper brought to Chennai by craftspersons from Jaipur, Jodhpur and Barmer. The ongoing exhibition of `Rajasthan Handicrafts' features diverse items ranging from Jaipur's painted furniture and vibrant block printed textiles to Rajput miniatures executed on silk and cotton, Kishengarh School of art wall hangings as well as exquisite miniature art on marble and stone. Add to this a million multi-hued glass and lac bangles and Rajasthan's vibrant craft scenario is complete.
The exhibition showcases items that are at once moderately priced and high on quality. The deftly executed wall hanging paintings on silk feature Rajput and Mughal miniature reproductions, mythological scenes andfinely delineated floral themes.
Equally exquisite are painted marble wall hangings and `ground gem' paintings which are being sold by themselves or as embellishments on diaries, phone books, jewel boxes and so on. For those who love the exuberance of Rajasthan's colours, the exhibition offers a lot of choices. These range from pretty furniture itemspainted over with Rajput and Mughal miniatures to block printed saris, dupattas and bed linen from the famed block printing centres of Sanganer, Barmer and Jodhpur. And the lac glass bangle glints and glows with all the colours of the rainbow! Hand made phone books and leather pads, pretty greeting cards embellished with silk painting in Rajasthan's rich repertoire of folk mythology, bookmarks and semi precious jewellery set in oxidised silver- the exhibition has all this and more. The Rajasthan Handicrafts Exhibition-cum-sale that is on at Chettiar Hall ,T.T.K. Road ends on June 15.
